It is important that you understand how payment processing works from the time your customer swipes or inputs their data, all the way through to when you are paid for the transaction; so that you can fully understand the service you are paying for and what you are being charged for. A transaction is made through a terminal or online software that will send the payment information to the credit card’s issuing bank, which is where the funds will be coming from. Once the payment has been verified and the payment is approved, it will take 24 hours for the payment to be processed before any funds are transferred. At the end of the processing period, each bank will settle with the merchant for the batch of transactions for the day.
Most processors break down Visa and MasterCard transactions into three categories:
• Qualified: A standard Visa or MasterCard is swiped through a terminal or mag reader and batched within 24 hours.
• Mid-qualified: A standard card is keyed into a terminal or software using AVS (an address-verification system), or a corporate card is swiped.
• Non-qualified: A standard card is keyed in without AVS, a corporate card is keyed in, or a transaction is not batched or settled in 24 hours.
Due to the increased risk, transactions that qualify as mid or non-qualified transactions are going to be the most expensive to process. American Express and Discover offer different rates than Visa and MasterCard and do not offer tiered rates for mid or non-qualified transactions. In other words they charge you a single rate across the board. Their rates are also different than those of Visa and MasterCard, in that they base their rates on the type of business, average ticket, and finally whether the transaction was completed through a swipe (customer physically swiped their card in your business) or whether it was manually entered by a representative of your company.
MERCHANT ACCOUNTS
Setup a merchant account with us today and begin processing credit card payments in 24 hours or less. Our merchant accounts enable you to process a transaction from anyone, at any time from anywhere, safely and securely. This means that you’re open for business, for anyone at anytime, no matter what.
The type of transactions you will be processing will determine the risk and the rate the bank will charge you for the transaction. A transaction where the card was physically swiped offers less of a risk, than that of a transaction that was keyed in by one of your representatives. Swiping a customer's credit card will offer the lowest risk because you will have electronic proof that the card was present, plus you were also given the opportunity to verify the cardholder’s identification. When a card is not present during the transaction, the transaction is assessed as a higher risk, as it is very difficult for merchants to verify a customer’s identification.
With GET, you will be assigned a personal account manager who knows your business and will help you evaluate which services are best suited for your company. We are here to support your needs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to ensure you never miss a transaction. Our hassle-free service enables you to start processing as quickly as possible, whether you have your Merchant ID number available or not.
CREDIT CARD PROCESSING
When a payment is being processed, there are six separate entities involved to insure the payment is processed, quickly and securely. These six entities are involved whether the transaction was initiated through a card swipe or through a transaction that was initiated through an online storefront:
1. The consumer
2. The merchant
3. GET
4. Card association
5. The issuing bank.
6. The merchant bank
• Retail Credit Card Authorization Process
• Consumer initiates transaction (selects goods/services to purchase and goes to checkout)
• Merchant begins to processes transaction by sending request to GET
• GET receives requests and submits request to card association
• Card Association sends requests to credit card issuing bank
• Issuing bank accepts or declines transaction and sends message to card association
• Card association contacts GET with card authorization
• Merchant sends GET “fulfillment notification to permit settlement” meaning the goods have been delivered or have been shipped to the consumer. The capture of funds takes place when the credit card authorization is given to the issuing bank and the consumer’s credit card is charged for the goods, or services, requested or received by the consumer.
**This entire process takes less than 16 seconds** Finally, once the merchant settles their batch and collects funds from issuing bank, the funds are then delivered into the merchant's bank.
CREDIT CARD SALES
A credit card sales draft is a legal and binding contract that serves to protect you and provide proof of a transaction. A draft should be completed and imprinted for all credit sales, and should be kept in your records for a minimum of 180 days (the time a consumer can dispute a charge with MasterCard and Visa). If a discrepancy should arise, you will have physical evidence of the transaction. If you are an Internet or mail/telephone based company your sales draft will be electronically produced, and you should retain a record of these transactions as well. A manual imprinter should be used if:• Merchant has to manually punch in the credit card number, expiration date, etc
• Merchant does not have a credit card printer The following should be on all credit card sales drafts:
• Last four digits of the Credit Card Number
• Credit Card Authorization and Reference Number
• Customer Signature
• Expiration Date
• Date of Credit Card Sale
• Amount of Credit Card Sale
• Description of Goods and Services
CHARGEBACKS
If a customer contests a charge, you will be given an opportunity to show proof of the transaction.
If you are not able to prove the cardholder authorized the transaction, then the chargeback will be issued and the customer’s issuing bank will be issued the funds that were originally paid to you, the merchant. All chargebacks are put on record with the merchant bank and can affect your company/corporation’s credit and can severely damage a merchant 's services account if too many chargebacks occur. GET will notify you, the merchant, as soon as a chargeback is issued, before the credit card transaction is removed from your bank. If a chargeback is issued and you are able to prove that the transaction is valid and authorized by the cardholder, the funds will be placed back in your bank account. At this point if the customer continues to dispute the charge, a Type III chargeback occurs and this can lead to legal action if an agreement is not made concerning the credit card transaction in question. A merchant’s reserve account cannot be used to pay for a chargeback. This account is put in place as a security issue for the acquiring bank and/or credit card processing company. The best way to prevent chargebacks is to closely monitor how the payment is being processed and insuring you are taking all the steps necessary to verify the cardholders identity. It is your responsibility as the merchant to protect yourself against chargebacks and/or fraudulent credit card users.
PCI
Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standard About Consumer Data Security
Your customers want assurance that their credit card account information is safe. However, offering your customers a safe and secure way to pay is more than just a good business practice—it’s a Visa and MasterCard processing requirement and in some states it’s becoming the law. With the rising incidence of credit card fraud, there is an ever-increasing focus on protecting consumer data. Any cardholder data obtained during the payment process is confidential and therefore must be protected by merchants. Every merchant who touches credit card account information is responsible for safeguarding that information and can be held liable for security compromises if they have not taken the required precautions. To help prevent the theft of card data, Visa and MasterCard, along with other major card associations (American Express and Discover), have developed a common security standard for all merchants that process cardholder data. The PCI Data Security Standard Program applies to all entities that store, transmit or process cardholder data regardless of payment method (online, mail/telephone orders or in-person retail). The fines and penalties for non-compliance with these requirements range from $25,000 to as high as $500,000. Thus, compliance with this new standard is critical. This new industry standard, the Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standard, is intended to ensure that merchants' card processing procedures meet certain security requirements. The following 12 requirements comprise the PCI Data Security Standards and apply to all merchants that process, transmit, or store cardholder data:
1. Install and maintain a firewall configuration to protect data
2. Do not use vendor-supplied defaults for system passwords and other security parameters
3. Protect stored data
4. Encrypt transmission of cardholder data and sensitive information across public networks
5. Use and regularly update anti-virus software
6. Develop and maintain secure systems and applications
7. Restrict access to data by business need-to-know
8. Assign a unique ID to each person with computer access
9. Restrict physical access to cardholder data
10. Track and monitor all access to network resources and cardholder data
11. Regularly test security systems and processes
12. Maintain a policy that addresses information security These standards sometimes referred to as the "digital dozen," represent good business practices; but each standard is also comprised of more detailed requirements which govern the procedures for safeguarding transaction data.
Many merchants have taken steps to comply with these requirements, but those that remain out of compliance face significant fines, expensive recovery costs, possible loss of ability to accept card transactions, and damage to their business reputation. These consequences are being experienced regularly by merchants that ignore compliance requirements or experience cardholder data compromises. Global Electronic Technology, Inc. (GET) understands the importance on ensuring that its merchant customers have access to state-of-the-art tools to protect transaction information and cardholder data. We are taking an active role in helping merchants comply with the PCI Data Security Standards and will be contacting every GET merchant to provide an easy to use online compliance program. This program consists of a self-assessment questionnaire along with periodic certified network security scans (if applicable). Should you have any questions regarding the PCI Data Security Standards, please do not hesitate to contact one of our Customer Service representatives at 888-775-1500.

Our risk assessment begins with your application, depending on the type of industry your business belongs to, and the considered risk based on transactions processed in the industry’s past, the bank will determine the rates that will be available for your company to process transactions through our secure gateway Safeguard. On your end, risk assessment will be done based on the transaction type. The risk will vary on the way the transaction was initiated, whether it was swiped or if the credit card information was manually keyed. Swiping a customers credit card will offer the lowest risk, as you will have electronic proof that the card was present and you were also given the opportunity to verify the cardholder’s identification. Due to the fact that banks issue corporate credit cards to sub holders of the primary--the corporation--transactions made with a corporate card will be considered higher risks. Transactions that are keyed in are assessed as higher risk, because there is no evidence that the card was present or that the cardholder's identification was verified. Beyond the actual transaction, Visa and MasterCard holders are able to dispute a charge for 180 days after the transaction. In the case that the cardholder disputes a charge, their bank will investigate the transaction and if sufficient evidence is found that the transaction was fraudulent, the result will be a chargeback. It is essential that you do everything in your power to insure that the transactions your representatives are processing are securely processed, and that the identity of the cardholder is verified. Not only will you receive a chargeback for these transactions, but it will also affect your merchant score. If it were to become a persistent issue, your rates will increase, and eventually, your ability to process credit card payments will be revoked.HOW TO ACCEPT CREDIT

• GET receives requests and submits request to card association
• Card Association sends requests to Credit Card issuing bank
• Issuing bank accepts or declines transaction and sends message to card association • Card association contacts GET with card authorization

The capture of funds takes place when the credit card authorization is given to the issuing bank and the consumer’s credit card is charged for the goods, or services, requested or received by the consumer.
**This entire process takes less than 16 seconds** Finally, when the merchant settles its batch, and collects funds from issuing bank, and funds are delivered into merchants bank.
INTERNET CREDIT CARD AUTHORIZATION
• Consumer initiates transaction (selects goods/services to purchase and goes to checkout)• Consumer enters credit card information into a secure form online and the encrypted data is sent to GET
• GET receives data and sends it to Card Association, which in turns sends the request to the issuing bank.
• Issuing bank accepts or declines transaction and sends back message to the card association
**This entire process takes less than 16 seconds**
CREDIT CARD AUTHORIZATION
Credit card authorization happens when the bank that issued the credit card being used approves a transaction. An authorization number is issued to the merchant services account (GET) and payment of good/services is guaranteed so long as:• A valid card has been used by the authorized cardholder
• The cardholder has signed the credit card sales draft
• The credit card transaction is not disputed by the cardholder.
CREDIT CARD DEPOSITS
After a transaction is completed, a deposit will be made into your account and a debit to the cardholder’s credit line is applied. GET is here to insure that you get your money in a timely fashion, and in most cases the funds are transferred at the time of authorization, but can take up to 72 hours. If for some reason your transaction requires delivery of good/services at a later date, GET will conduct a separate deposit transaction.TRUST IN THE PROCESS
It all begins with trust. From the moment the issuing bank issues a credit card to your customer to the time the issuing bank transfers funds into your bank account; the issuing bank is trusting that the customer will repay the bank in a timely fashion and will not default on their payments. The issuing bank is also trusting that you, the merchant, has done everything in your power to insure that the transaction was initiated and authorized by the cardholder. Once the payment is received, you are entrusted that the goods and services will be furnished to the customer. In case the goods/services are not rendered to the customer, the customer can dispute a charge. In this case a chargeback will occur; where you, the merchant, will be charged back for the funds that were paid to you by the issuing bank for the goods/services that were promised to the customer. Chargebacks are rare; however, they can be damaging to your merchant service account, as this will lower your overall trust and reputation, and will lower your merchant credit score.AVOID CHARGEBACKS
There are ten basic things that merchants can do to protect themselves when it comes to credit card processing.1. Make sure you’re dealing with a legitimate cardholder.
2. Always check for the authorized signature
3. With telephone/mail orders, get the name and phone number of the cardholder and tell them that you will contact them before goods/services are delivered. This is effective because fraudulent users will not want to give out this information. You may also want to use a ground carrier that requires a signature for delivery and only ship to the cardholder’s billing address. A criminal will not want the goods/services delivered to the same address as the cardholder’s shipping address. If your credit card terminal has the AVS system, the billing address for the credit card used will be known.
4. With Internet orders, the merchant should always make sure that their Internet software asks for or has:
• Cardholder’s phone number and email address (verification of a legitimate domain name)
• Cardholder’s IP address (can be used to track down a fraudulent credit card user)
• Posted warning on the web site that the merchant prosecutes criminals
• The ability to produce hard copies of credit card receipts saying that goods and services have been provided
5. Try to know the cardholder.
6. Use AVS-if the address verification fails on any level then the merchant services account can refuse the credit card transaction or can call the cardholder to verify a billing address.
7. Get a signed receipt and signed proof of delivery (it can be used if issued a retrieval request).
8. Merchants should be clear and consistent concerning warranties and return policies when it comes to credit card transactions
9. Submit credit card deposit transactions only when goods/services have been delivered.
10. Keep Merchant ID and Terminal ID secure so no one can make unauthorized credit card transactions. Make sure transaction-processing equipment stays at your place of business, and make sure only authorized personnel have access to credit card equipment. You will also want to make sure that your Internet software provider, when used, keeps ID secure.
Description and Explanation of Discount Rates, Transaction Fees and Other Fees
The discount rate is the percentage that is charged for the services that are rendered to you by GET. Rates can vary, depending on the assessed risk of the proposed transactions. Swipe rates are lower because you, as a merchant, are given the opportunity to verify the identity of the cardholder, and thus are considered a lower risk when compared to a transaction that was initiated through an online purchase. If you, as a merchant, decide to accept credit card transactions through the mail, telephone or online, you increase the way in which your customer can send you a payment. With more payment options, your risk of unauthorized transactions will increase. With these types of transactions, you are not given the same type of opportunity to verify the cardholder’s identification, and thus the discount rates for these types of transactions are slightly higher. Over the years, GET has seen remarkable technological advancements that have made credit card acceptance more efficient and less susceptible to fraud. As a result of such advancements, we are able to offer you the lowest rates possible for your industry. The reason for the difference in rates is because the merchant's services account receives payment from the credit card processing company before they receive anything. The credit card processor is taking a risk, trusting that the merchant will provide the goods and services that were promised when the credit card transaction took place. A merchant account’s discount rate can be negotiable if the volume of credit card transactions warrants special attention. Also, please be aware that a lower or higher discount rate is not a good indicator of the quality of service from a credit card processor. Always investigate all aspects of a credit card processing company, and never go with someone just because they have low rates. The transaction fee is a separate charge from the discount rate and will be added to each transaction.Credit Card Processing Equipment and Credit Card Processing Software
Once your merchant services account is approved, your credit card equipment will be programmed and shipped within 24-48 hours. All credit card equipment will be shipped by ground unless the merchant makes other arrangements. Software will be made available within 24 hours by email. Customer service on credit card processing equipment and credit card processing software is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Terminal replacement will be subject to the manufacturer’s warranty.

Make sure you never miss a sale and protect yourself from unforeseen mishaps.MANAGING RISK

INTERNET CREDIT CARD AUTHORIZATION

• GET receives data and sends it to Card Association, which in turns sends the request to the issuing bank.
• Issuing bank accepts or declines transaction and sends back message to the card association
